 "Built to Last" 2009-10-07
By Kenneth R. Kadan (San Diego, CA)
I purchased this external drive for my netbook early in May 2009. I have used this unit almost everyday without experiencing problem one. So, under the heading of reliability, I rate the LG drive five stars. The ease of installation was simple and direct - my netbook recognized the LG external dvd drive immediately. I was up and running in minutes - plug and play all the way. Obviously, this is a portable unit and in my opinion, of excellent design and construction. I use a leather bag to carry my full compliment of netbook equipment and the LG external drive fits safely inside a soft internal pocket.

In conclusion, this is a reliable, well designed, portable external drive built to last. Highly recommended.

 "Dead on arrival" 2009-08-24
By Frank Paris (Beaverton, OR USA)
I wish I could review this product. From other reviews it looks great. But it was dead on arrival, and people need to get a sense about how often this happens. I put the installation disk in, the LED blinks for a few seconds and I can hear it seeking around Then the LED turns off and my computer does not recognize the drive. I tried to hook it up on two different computers, one running Windows XP and the other running Windows Vista. Exact same behavior. I hoped it was because it needed power from an additional power cable included with the drive and tried that and got the same result on both machines. Then I hoped it was because the installation disk was bad, but I was able to read the installation disk from another DVD reader. Also the LG could not read another disk I knew was OK. Another negative: the tray is incredibly flimsy. Maybe all drives this size are like this, but it does not inspire confidence. What a hassle and utter waste of time.

 "Excellent portable DVD-rom" 2009-08-21
By Mark B Denver (Denver, CO)
This lightweight, USB-powered DVD-writer is quiet, efficient, and a must have for the Netbook crowd that need an external optical drive. The USB cord could be longer to be more useful, otherwise it has to be placed right next to the computer. But the drive works very well. It is very compact, being almost as small as a CD case and only about three times thicker.

 "Solid" 2009-07-28
By Frank Walter (California, MD)
I have not tried the inscribing feature of this drive yet but as for reading and writing DVD's it works well. One snag I had was that with the Acer Aspire One I got to go with this drive I would get an error upon connecting the drive. It would say that to much power was being drawn through the USB port. Even when I connected both wires the error would occur. All I had to do to get past this was in the USB driver window I had to uncheck a box that let it pull more power to prevent the error from occuring. I use both wires to power the drive to make sure I don't pull to much through one USB slot. Once I got past this initial hang-up it works great.

 "Great Netbook Companion" 2009-07-22
By R. Bell (Outside Chicago, IL USA)
I have a Sammy netbook and needed a drive for several reasons. First, I wanted to install some software straight from disc. Second, wanted to be able to burn files straight to DVD. And third, wanted to watch movies (Netflix) on flights.

I travel a great deal and use my netbook for work and to back up my camera cards en route. Being able to burn these to disk when I get home was a big consideration. I have carried the drive with me on several trips and it performs great. It does not seem to draw much power off my Sammy and only requires one USB port to power it. It is a great companion on long flights to Europe. I agree with some the cord provided may be a bit short but I already carry a longer cord for my Blackberry so I just use the one cord for both.

For under $100 I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
